World War One
The event which sparked the start of World War One was when the Archduke Franz Fernindand from Austria was assasinated in Serbia. This was on the 28th of July in 1914. This war lasted for 4 years from 1914 to 1918 and included most of the world. The main places involved were Europe, the Middle East, Turkey and the Pacific and their allies. It was named 'World War' because some weapons of mass destruction of which the world had never seen before were used and the war was very large scale and involved many parts of the world.
Paris Peace Conference
The Paris Peace Conference was held at the end of World War One to try and stop any more large wars breaking out. The people involved were France, England, Italy, America and a few other small allies including Australia. At the conference they formed the League of Nations which was a suggestion from President Woodrow Wilson from America. It was considered a failure though when World War Two broke out this was mainly due to the fact that members would come and go quite simply. This was considered to be one of their great weaknesses especially when Italy left. Another great weakness was that it was lacking an army or any means of compulsion which meant they were unable to actually enforce any ruling. It did achieve some successes though against slavery, the sale of drugs, the trafficking of women and against the trafficking of refugees.
Billy Hughes
Billy Hughes was Prime Minister of Australia during World War One and was part of parliament in 1901 when the nation of Australia was formed. He was best known for his representation in the Paris Peace conference which gave Australia a voice. He also won a little digger award for being a fierce defender of Australian rights. He tried to stop Australia going to war but was rejected by some of the country and his own political party. He also fought to have any mention of racial equality banned from the League of Nations. He died while he was still a member of parliament at 90, the oldest person in parliament in Australian history.
