nEW tECHNOLOGIES AND ideas (1750 - 1918)
During this time there was the American Revolution and the French Revolution. The reason for the American Revolution was because the people in America were unhappy with the goverment of England who were ruling over them and in which they had no representation in. What started the revolution was taxes, the English put taxes on British colonists in America and even on tea. When the tax on tea was introduced the Americans were very unhappy so said 'we would rather throw our tea away than pay taxes' they then proceeded to dump a load of tea into Boston Harbour.
The reason for the French Revolution was because the French were unhappy with the running of the country. What started the revolution was a small group of people attacking the Parisian prison of the Bastille. Even though the prison only had 7 prisoners at the time it was still a big turning point for the French.
There was also the Industrial Revolution which involved the invention of the steam engine. This changed travel and transportation of goods drastically because it sped many processes up massively. It also created a large market for coal mining and selling because the steam engine was very popular.
Some of the new ideas from this time were Nationalism, Imperialism, Capitalism, Socilaism, Chartism, Egalitarianism and Social Darwinism.
Nationalism - People were becoming seperate nations and not just part of a big empire. It would be a key contributor to the outbreak of World War One.
Imperialism - It is the control of certain countries over others. It took the form of colonisation especially because of the discovery of the Americas.
Capitalism - It is economic organisations that relied on private ownership of industries and businesses. It started with the Industrial Revolution.
Socialism - The government played a crucial role in the allocation of resources and the distibution of wealth. It was used to counter act capitalism because of overproduction and exploitation of workers.
Chartism - This strategy was to give all men the vote and stop the wealthy political decision making. It showed the potential for the lower classes.
Egalitarianism - It championed the idea of liberty, equality and fraternity. It stressed that no person was better than another.
Social Darwinism - It brought about the theory of evolution. It was named because of Charles Darwin's book called 'On the origin of species by means of natural selection'. This book spoke about some races are better than others for example that the English are better than everyone else.
