Imperialism and the modern world
The main country who was invading was the British but the Dutch, French, Russian, Portugese and the Spanish were also quite involved. There were even more countries than that invading on a smaller scale like Germany, Italy and Belgium. The main parts of the world being invaded and colonised were Africa and a small bit of South-East Asia. People wanted to invade and conquer more and more of the world between 1815 and 1915 because they realised that larger empires meant more goods to sell and more markets to sell them at. Overall this meant more money towards the empire which made them more and more powerful.
British Imperialism
The discovery of the Americas by the Europeans really started this period of colonisation and conquering. From there many countries started to attack and colonise others. Just after World War 1 the British Empire extended to approximately one quarter of the world's land mass and population. The materials being shipped in from places like Australia, North and South America, India and Africa really helped the Empire to boom during the Industrial Revolution. Also the Imperialism idea had a great effect on the Indigenous people of Australia becase the British believed that land had to have fencing to show ownership.
American Imperialism
Rather than spreading their country around the world the Americans decided to fill up the land they already had. To do this they colonised more and more westward hoping to settle from coast to coast. This had a great effect on the Indigenous Americans because of similar reasons to Australia's colonisation that fences mean ownership. By the end of the century America had grown to be the wealthiest country in the world through economic power. They also realised that this power could be more helpful in gaining allies than military power.
